Feb 2018- Stone Hill & Bad News about Oscar

February brought the bad news (I will sound like broken record here) that Oscar failed his x-rays; he has the same elbow problems as Jagger.  I was devastated both for him and for the loss of a what a wonderful service animal he would have been for someone in need.  We had to also make the decision not to adopt him.  As much as we would have loved to keep him it is unrealistic for us to move next year with 5 animals.  Luckily Oscar's reputation as a wonderful boy with a very sweet personality meant that there was a family very eager to be his forever family.  In other February happenings....

Oscar, visiting GDA pup Serina & Jagger

More soccer Saturdays...

A visit to the hair salon.

She got princess curls!

Whenever I work at my desk this happens. How I love being surrounded by dogs (and Maria!).

4 pups (and a cat) on the porch! (Isaac & Salt under the table, Viktor, Jagger & Bruno).  I had dropped Oscar off this day for his elbow scopes.  We would not get him back for 3 weeks.

The school had a long weekend holiday in the middle of the month so we went with another family to our favorite dog-friendly spot an hour outside of Pretoria (Stone Hill) where we spent most of our time walking with our (combined) 4 dogs.

Maria & Ina gathering flowers (with Isaac as supervisor).

Back in our cottage the children spent hours building with Magna-Tiles.

Jagger & Isaac up to their usual antics.

A man and his dog.

We visited the Cradle of Humankind- Maropeng for the 4th time since we moved here.  Our children love this museum!

Isaac & Maria on an evening walk.

Isaac loved the dog swimming pool...

...shaped like a bone, of course!

Time for sundowners!

Braai with friends- our favorite SA tradition.

My morning run.

Visiting again our favorite candle making place.  Gio is a boy of many contrasts.  These are the two candles he chose!

Wiped out after two 5K walks!

Driving home.  With two children, 2 adults, 3 dogs and luggage this was the only place I could put Isaac!

Jagger, our bed hog.

"I write like the big kids now!"  Love her multi-age classroom!

Another morning waiting for the bus, another independently made outfit choice!

Flight academy class at Bounce on a rainy afternoon.

I got to visit Oscar a few days after his operation.  He was in good spirits and did not seem to upset about the haircut!

After my visit with Oscar I brought Jagger's two sisters (who are in training now) back to their puppy raisers in Pretoria.  (from left: Jagger, Jade & Joss-Lynn).  Jagger looks so sleepy as he had just finished a grueling hydrotherapy session.

Spray-a-thon to raise money for cancer treatment.

I was asked by GDA to take another puppy and I happily said yes (hoping the third time would be the charm!).  Meet Alaska.  She (YES, my first girl dog ever!) is 7 months old.  Her original Puppy Raiser was returning to FT work so could not longer keep her.  I happily stepped in.

Sometimes the school days are extra tiring!
Usually I find Gio's swim team stuff crumpled in a soggy lump in his bedroom.  Imagine my surprise when I found this recently!

Alaska (purple collar) joined our family when we were already hosting 6-month old Bessie for a week.  I could only tell the difference between the two based on collar color.

Alaska came along to Jagger's check up at the vet.  Jagger and I are working towards becoming a therapy dog team (http://www.therapytopdogs.co.za/) and part of it requires a a vet certificate.  The vet had just entered the room with the dreaded thermometer.  Both puppies were clearly concerned!

My twins Bessie (left) and Alaska

At the end of the month Gio's grade had a sleepover at school.

Camp meeting

Final morning of February.  Perhaps Maria senses winter is on its way....

Jan 2018- Skiing & Big Girl School!

Oops!  Wow did I get behind.  Writing the January blog here in March....

Our Italian holidays, continued....
Off to the Alps for a few days of skiing.
Gio could not wait to hit the slopes!

Maria trying out her helmet!

After a morning of skiing (sorry, I did not take a single photo!), we did some shopping while the boys stayed on the mountain.

Post-ski snuggles.

Just told her we are heading back to South Africa tomorrow.

Back to summer!!

Our 4 pets made "Pet of the month" at our kennels!

Jagger back to hydrotherapy after 3 weeks off...

Reunited with sweet Oscar!
First day of "big girl" school!

While Maria enjoyed her first day at AISJ I drove Oscar to his belated 1st birthday party with his littermates (Oscar is in the middle).

From left: Osha, Omo, Obi, Oslo & Oscar

Bruno absolutely adores Oscar- his favorite companion.

2nd day of school and 1st day on the bus!

Oscar and I visited Maria's class to read a story.  Oscar was quite relaxed about it!
One weekend Paolo and Gio traveled to visit an orphanage.  Gio spent many hours playing with the children there.

Soccer morning.

Got a haircut...

....just like Papa!

Every single meal Oscar sits vigil hoping a bit of food will be left behind by Bruno (Oscar eating time-2 seconds...Bruno eating time....10 minutes!).
Part of Oscar's training requires him to sit on this narrow platform.  At class today Oscar found a way to cheat!

Party time!

Maria loves every visit to Bounce!

Some school days require a crown.

They actually left me a bit of room tonight...

We love our evening walks on the golf course!

Oscar supervising Maria's swim lesson.
Family Fun day at school!

Bedtime!

Waiting for the school bus (Maria picks her own outfits these days!).

Oscar definitely passes the "gets along with cats" test for Guide Dogs!
Raining morning waiting for the bus.

Big girl school is exhausting.  Lately I have been finding Maria asleep under her bed in the afternoon.

Today's hydrotherapy included the hot tub.  Jagger did not complain.

Maria was given this beautiful hand-me-down dress from our dear friends the Brosnans.  She loves it!
